Karl Kaisel
Karl works interdisciplinarily, expanding the possibilities of filmmaking through animation and exploring different technologies for storytelling and world creation. With his master’s degree from University of Applied Arts Vienna in Art & Science he thinks of art and science as not two ends of spectrums but rather two entangled fields deeply interconnected. Art invisions new worlds while science gives tools for investigating it. His works are based on artistic research appling methods of archival research, autoethnography and folk knowledge mixed with ecology.
Karl places himself somewhere between artist, filmmaker and designer. As a designer he values aesthetics as a tool to access the viewers’ attention. His education in media design and experience working in animation, design establishes a strong technical background to his conceptual works. As an artist, Karl is interested in the relationships that humans and nonhumans have; the artificial dichotomy and tension that is dividing the world into natural and unnatural. He grew up in Estonia in a peatland forest, which is the defining aspect of his creative work. The works stem from the strong connection to the land and everything that is inhabiting it, living or nonliving. Through that connection he sees the world as an intertwined relationship expanding through every aspect of life. While this world is going through rapid changes and multiple crises it’s crucial to imagine worlds that are not only envisioning the apocalyptic scenarios but also positive and functioning worlds where different agents are inhabiting this world in symbiosis.
